A Black woman who was violently assaulted by a security guard at a Longueuil mall in June 2020 finally got her day in court Wednesday, when her attacker pleaded guilty and she read her victim impact statement to the court. Kakandjika says she tried to reason with the guard during the altercation, telling him she had worked as an immigration officer in South Africa, her country of birth, and that she knew something about law enforcement. She says Primeau responded: “‘Ma’am, look around. This is not your country.’”
CBC News – Immigration Canada Staff in Postings Abroad Mocked, Harassed by Managers: Employee Survey
Multiple employees at the federal government’s Immigration Department said they were subject to racist micro-aggressions, harassment and professional marginalization during postings in its offices abroad, according to a survey commissioned by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Staff cited management making fun of their accents, and group leaders expressing “overt disdain and even hatred for people from certain countries and for immigrants to Canada in general, using racial slurs and stating support for violence against people from other countries,” according to a summary of the survey’s findings published by the department.
Toronto Star – Funeral for Ukrainian Man Who Drowned in Quebec River to Be Held Friday
A funeral will be held Friday for a Ukrainian refugee who drowned in a river southeast of Quebec City. The final farewell to 21-year-old Sumit Shyder will take place in St-Anselme Church, in the town bearing the same name, about 30 kilometres from the provincial capital. Shyder was reported missing after going for a swim in the Etchemin River on July 19, and police discovered his body Friday.
Pivot – Des travailleurs migrants dénoncent du travail forcé dans une usine québécoise
Recrutés au Mexique et au Honduras pour venir travailler en Montérégie comme soudeurs, quatre travailleurs migrants sont tombés de haut lorsqu’ils ont découvert les faces cachées de leur emploi. Tous dénoncent avoir été victimes de « fraude, travail forcé et menace » par l’entreprise Systèmes Finex. S’inscrivant dans un système d’immigration qui promeut les contrats de travail fermés soumettant les travailleur·euses étranger·ères à l’emprise totale de leurs employeurs, cette situation ne serait pas unique.
Le Devoir – La CCMM demande à Québec d’être moins rigide sur le français et l’immigration
Les nouvelles exigences que Québec s’apprête à instaurer en matière de connaissance du français chez les nouveaux arrivants sont trop élevées et créent même une barrière « absurde » pour les étudiants des universités anglophones. C’est du moins ce que dénoncent la Chambre de commerce du Montréal métropolitain (CCMM) et son président, Michel Leblanc, qui demandent à la ministre de l’Immigration, Christine Fréchette, de ne pas se « tirer dans le pied » en resserrant trop les exigences dans son projet de modifications du Règlement sur l’immigration.
