At a press conference in Hamilton Monday morning, Trudeau said he and the mayor have had a conversation about the money. “Our governments are looking together for how we can work through all this,” he said.

The provincial government has announced a new grant it says will help make jobs more accessible for newcomers in B.C. “We’re breaking down barriers to employment and helping immigrants and newcomers build their lives in this wonderful province,” Sheila Malcolmson, minister of social development and poverty reduction, said Wednesday, in announcing the province’s $7-million in funding to the non-profit Immigrant Employment Council of B.C. (IECBC).

When Cyprin Ontita came to Canada from Kenya a little over a month ago, he said he was “in the dark” about what life would be like as an asylum seeker. “What you expect when you come from Africa is that you will get a good house. You’ll get work. At first, you just don’t know,” he said. But when he arrived, first to Quebec City then Toronto, the 37-year-old former youth worker said he found himself sleeping outdoors, unable to access shelter.

An Iranian refugee who has lived in British Columbia since 1995 but did not receive permanent resident status until last year has had his challenge to the constitutionality of the province’s foreign buyers’ tax rejected by the B.C. Supreme Court. Kourosh Bakhtiari purchased a home in West Vancouver’s tony British Properties neighbourhood for $6.6 million in 2019, according to the court decision issued earlier this week.
