Globe and Mail – Border Agency Investigating Links Between Student Visa Fraud and Crime, Gangs

The Canada Border Services Agency, which is investigating abuses of the student visa system, has uncovered evidence that some people who came to Canada on student visas were not attending university or college but were involved in criminality and gangs. The CBSA would not disclose details of continuing investigations, but it told The Globe and Mail that a probe into 300 students who gained study permits with fake acceptance letters from universities and colleges has so far identified 10 people involved in criminal activity in Canada.

CBC News – How Faster Work Permits Could Help Ease Canada’s Refugee Shelter Crisis

The refugee housing crisis in Toronto is drawing attention to another challenge facing asylum seekers in Canada: how long it takes for them to get permission to work in this country. Asylum seekers are allowed to get a job in Canada while their claim for refugee status is being assessed, but only if they’ve been issued a work permit. Staff at agencies providing services to refugee claimants say their clients are typically waiting anywhere from several months to more than a year for work permits.

Toronto Star – Olivia Chow Gets Unanimous Support from Toronto Council for New Shelter Spaces for Refugees

The city will immediately open up 150 new shelter spaces for refugee claimants under a proposal put forward by Olivia Chow on Wednesday during her first council meeting as mayor. And in an early test of her ability to secure support for her agenda, council approved Chow’s motion unanimously in a vote of 26-0, marking a harmonious start to her term in office.

CityNews – Quebec Police Looking for Ukrainian Refugee Missing After Going for Swim in River

A Ukrainian refugee who recently arrived in Quebec has been missing since Wednesday evening after he went swimming in a river southeast of Quebec City. Laura Torres, who works with a group that helps immigrants settle into the region, said the young man had fled the war in Ukraine and arrived in Quebec earlier this month. Quebec provincial police said they are looking for a man in his 20s who disappeared after going for a swim in the Etchemin River in St-Anselme, Que., but they have not confirmed his identity.

Face au manque de personnel soignant, il y a eu des efforts qui ont été faits pour attirer des infirmières venant de pays francophones au cours des dernières années. Un cégep et un centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS) ont décidé de chercher auprès d’un autre groupe : les personnes diplômées hors Québec qui ont déjà immigré dans la province, mais qui ne maîtrisent pas encore le français.
