CBC News – Vancouver Council Announces Komagata Maru Street Name to Address Historic Wrongs

Vancouver councillors have approved the honorary street name of Komagata Maru Place for an iconic landmark in a move to redress a case of systemic discrimination that took place more than a century ago. The Komagata Maru — also called the Guru Nanak Jahaaz — docked near the current location of Canada Place in 1914 with 340 Sikh, 27 Muslim and 12 Hindu passengers on board, most of whom were denied entry into Canada despite having valid travel documents.

CTV News – Government to Recognize Historical Significance of Canada’s Ban on Chinese Immigrants

Parks Canada Minister Steven Guilbeault says the federal government has designated the 1923 ban on immigration by people of Chinese origin as an event of historical significance. July marks the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Immigration Act, which banned Chinese people from entering Canada. Speaking at a reception for Asian Heritage Month, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the ban was immoral and unfair. In a press release, Parks Canada says the legislation was the result of anti-Asian racism, and lasted for 24 years.

National Post – Deputy Mayor Suing CSIS Over Alleged ‘Typecasting’ of Chinese Immigrants

A former Ontario cabinet minister who has been the focus of intelligence leaks related to Chinese interference in Canada is suing CSIS, saying the spy agency publicly humiliated him because of a “stereotypical typecasting of immigrants born in China as being somehow untrustworthy.” Liberal Michael Chan, who’s currently deputy mayor of the Toronto-area city of Markham, says persecution by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service began in 2010 and has continued recently with disclosure of what he called unreliable and “frail” intelligence reports.

Globe and Mail – Canada on Track for 100 Million Population but Public Support Can’t Be Taken for Granted: Century Initiative CEO

The chief executive of the Century Initiative says Canada “has reached the point of no return” when it comes to welcoming more immigrants, as its modelling shows Canada is on track to more than double its population to at least 100 million by the turn of the century. But Lisa Lalande warned that existing high levels of public support for increasing immigration cannot be taken for granted. “If public opinion shifts on immigration, policy will shift, and ultimately that will be detrimental to the future of the country,” she said in an interview.
