CBC News – P.E.I.’s Chess Champion Offering Free Lessons to Empower Fellow Newcomers

On a Friday afternoon inside a classroom used for music lessons, a group of students are ready to learn chess. Teaching the newbies is provincial champion Jorge Moreno, who came to P.E.I. last September and is already on track to become a national master. Moreno said he began thinking about starting a chess club and helping out other new Canadians master the mind sport as soon as he arrived from his native Peru.

Nine months after receiving her daughter’s official adoption papers from Lagos State in Nigeria, Andrea Eaton of Tillsonburg, Ont., is still waiting to bring her daughter, Maya, home. It’s not an unfamiliar story — Canada has a track record of delaying entry to adopted Nigerian children. It’s a problem advocates say is inexcusable and contravenes Canada’s international and domestic commitments to children.

Radio-Canada – Les cinq MRC de la région s’unissent pour attirer des travailleurs étrangers

Les municipalités régionales de comté (MRC) de la région se réunissent sous une seule bannière, le Grand Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, pour consolider leurs efforts en matière d’immigration et attirer plus de travailleurs étrangers dans les entreprises. Le gouvernement du Québec a investi 1,2 million de dollars dans cette nouvelle stratégie de recrutement. L’objectif est également d’augmenter la portée de leurs efforts de recrutement. Cette annonce s’inscrit dans la volonté du gouvernement du Québec d’accueillir principalement des immigrants qui parlent français.

Le Devoir – Québec lance un guichet unique regroupant tous les services en francisation

Après 15 ans de tentatives d’implantation, le Québec aura enfin un guichet unique regroupant tous les services en francisation. Lancé le jeudi 1er juin, Francisation Québec permettra aux immigrants, aux citoyens non francophones et aux entreprises d’avoir accès à une offre de cours de français en s’inscrivant sur une plateforme en ligne. L’un des objectifs avoués de Francisation Québec est de recueillir et de centraliser des données probantes, notamment sur le nombre de personnes qui suivent des cours de francisation, leur niveau et l’absentéisme, des données que le MIFI ne collige pas à l’heure actuelle.

Meric Akmel was vacationing in New Brunswick last year when the owner of the B&B asked where her home is. Akmel had moved to Prince Edward Island from Turkey seven years ago, so the answer was easy. “P.E.I.” she said. The B&B owner looked confused. Akmel told the story during an event Saturday in Charlottetown called We’re Canada Bound: Stories of Making a New Life in Canada.

CBC News – Immigration Minister Says AI Isn’t Making Final Immigration Decisions

Immigration, Citizenship and Refugees Minister Sean Fraser says new technology has greatly accelerated processing times in his department — but he insists that artificial intelligence (AI) isn’t making any final decisions on whether an immigration application is approved. Fraser told a press conference on Friday that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has used new “advanced analytics” technology to great effect.
