Calgary Herald – Parliamentary Committee Calls for Modernized Safe Third Country Agreement

The agreement, first signed in 2004, means asylum seekers must make their claim wherever they arrive first — and they are turned away if they try to cross the border to make a claim in the other country. But on Tuesday, the House of Commons immigration committee tabled a report that calls for Canada to negotiate exceptions to that rule, particularly when it comes to people who have experienced gender-based violence.

Toronto Star – They Worked with Canada. But Ottawa Denies It Owes These Afghans Quick Help

In asking the Federal Court to dismiss the case, government lawyers argue that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada does not have a duty to process the permanent residence applications of 25 Afghans and their families within a certain timeframe. The legal action has been initiated by someone who worked as a security guard at the Canadian embassy for a decade and by two dozen employees of a law firm the embassy retained for local legal work.

Toronto Star – Numbers Reveal How the New Canada-U.S. Border Deal Is Affecting Irregular Migration

Since 12:01 a.m. on March 25 and up until May 11, a total of 546 cases of people crossing between the Canadian designated ports of entry have been processed, says the Canada Border Services Agency. Some 300 of them were intercepted by the RCMP during that 48-day period. The numbers suggest a huge drop in monthly arrivals in Canada from the first two months of this year — 4,994 in January and 4,581 in February.
