Global News – Refugee Family in ‘Limbo’ as Sudan War Prevents Arrival in Halifax
A mother of three children currently in a refugee camp who was supposed to be moving to Halifax is now stranded due to the ongoing war in Sudan. On May 3, the Open Harbour Refugee Association posted on Facebook that it had received information that the airport in Khartoum, Sudan, was officially closed. The family, originally from Eritrea, has been living in a refugee camp in Kassala, Sudan, and their original arrival date in Halifax would have been May 25.

La Corporation de développement économique de Timmins réclame la prolongation du Programme d’immigration dans les communautés rurales et du Nord, un projet-pilote qui arrive à échéance en août 2024. Selon Bailey Campbell, coordonnatrice de programme pour l’organisme, 338 personnes ont reçu une recommandation pour l’obtention de la résidence permanente grâce au programme depuis le lancement du projet-pilote il y a trois ans.Elle rassemble en ce moment des lettres de soutien qui seront envoyées au ministère de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté.

La ministre de l’Immigration, Christine Fréchette, promet de travailler à réduire les délais de traitement pour le parrainage des réfugiés. « Dans mes trois priorités, il y a celle de l’amélioration des délais et de l’amélioration des processus. On travaille en étroite collaboration avec le fédéral en ce sens-là. On va poursuivre dans la même veine », a-t-elle dit. Elle n’a toutefois pas voulu se prononcer sur des objectifs concrets de réduction des délais. « On travaille à fixer des améliorations », a-t-elle ajouté.
Radio-Canada – La Saskatchewan réduira les frais de scolarité des réfugiés ukrainiens
Les réfugiés ukrainiens venus s’établir en Saskatchewan en raison de la guerre n’auront plus à payer les frais réservés aux étudiants internationaux s’ils souhaitent faire des études postsecondaires. Grâce à une aide du gouvernement provincial, les étudiants ukrainiens paieront le même montant que ceux originaires de la province. Les étudiants internationaux doivent habituellement débourser entre 25 000 $ et 35 000 $ par année. Or, un étudiant saskatchewanais paie entre 7000 $ à 9000 $ pour une année d’étude.
CBC News – Government Says It’s Not Responsible for Danger Faced by Afghan Immigration Applicants
Twenty-four former employees of an Afghan law firm employed by Ottawa prior to the Taliban takeover in 2021, together with a former security guard employed by the Canadian embassy in Kabul, launched a lawsuit last September over what they call unreasonable delays in processing their immigration paperwork. In its reply to the lawsuit, the federal government said the court should consider Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s heavy workload, its lack of responsibility for directly endangering lives and the fact it never promised the plaintiffs a concrete “time frame.”
CTV News – As His Brother Is Buried Near North Bay, Man Is Stuck in Portugal
A man from Portugal who has permanent resident status in Canada is having trouble getting back to northern Ontario for his brother’s funeral. Bruno Pimenta is having a tough time getting the travel documentation he needs to get back to South River, located half an hour outside North Bay. Pimenta told CTV News he doesn’t have the documents to prove he’s a permanent resident, so he can’t return to Canada.
