Globe and Mail – Immigrants Struggling Amid Calgary’s Tight Rental Market

Due to its relative affordability and perceived abundance of tech jobs, Alberta’s largest city is becoming a magnet for immigrants. In 2022, Calgary welcomed 25,622 international migrants, a record number that represents about 60 per cent of the city’s total population growth. But as the number of immigrants increases, so do the pressures on Calgary’s rental market. Unlike interprovincial migrants, international migrants are more likely to become renters, at least initially.

CBC News – Federal Court to Hear Why Truck Driver in Fatal Broncos Crash Shouldn’t Be Deported

The Federal Court has agreed to allow the lawyer for a former truck driver who caused the deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash to argue against his possible deportation. In 2019, Jaskirat Singh Sidhu was sentenced to eight years after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm in the Saskatchewan crash that killed 16 people and injured 13 others. The Canada Border Services Agency recommended last year that Sidhu be handed over to the Immigration and Refugee Board to decide whether he should be deported to India.

CBC News – Hunted by the Taliban, Afghans Who Worked with Embassy Sue Ottawa Over Immigration Delays

Afghans who worked with the Canadian embassy in Kabul — and are now hiding from the Taliban — are suing the federal government, accusing Ottawa of dragging its feet on their immigration claims and demanding that it settle them without delay. Newly unsealed court documents say 24 former employees of a law firm retained by the embassy — and one guard employed by the embassy — are living in fear because they’ve been given no indication from the federal government that they’ll be able to move here.
