National Post – Quebec Lawyer Filed ‘Identical Cut and Paste’ Bogus Claims for 41 Refugees

The case behind the revelation is for a husband and wife, both professionals, who came to Canada from Iran in 2020 and claimed refugee protection. When the couple appeared before the IRB for a refugee hearing, the adjudicator was told by the government that 23 nearly identical claims for 41 refugee claimants mirrored the couple’s claim and all were insufficient. Their claim was denied because it lacked credibility. Represented by a new lawyer, Rachel Bourbeau, the couple appealed to the Federal Court to review the decision against claims of counsel’s incompetence.

CBC News – Despite Reforms, Asylum Seekers in Canada Still Face Lengthy Wait to Work

His savings have dried up, and he’s struggling to pay for food and rent. But like thousands of other asylum seekers, Abdul is still waiting for the federal government to issue him a work permit. Toronto Star – How a Botched Letter from Canada Condemned One Family to Torment in Afghanistan

Afzaly worked as a translator and fixer in Afghanistan for major Canadian media, including the Toronto Star and CBC. His parents and more than a dozen family members have been hiding for nearly two years, fearing the Taliban, who toppled the western-backed Afghan government in August 2021. His family is stranded in Kabul, they say, because of a mistaken facilitation letter, the kind meant to allow people to enter Canada, issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Al Jazeera – An Assault on Asylum? Experts Raise Alarm

Last May, for the first time in recorded history, more than 100 million people around the globe had been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, violence and persecution. Today, experts have cautioned that an equally alarming trend is also picking up pace: the “erosion” of the right to seek asylum in other countries. In North America, Canada last month extended a deal with the US that effectively allows it to shut the door on most asylum seekers who cross the US-Canada land border and send them back to the United States, even if they have reached Canadian territory.

Globe and Mail – Request to Remove Newspaper Article Among Ottawa’s Queries to Social-Media Giants

Newly released documents show that a federal government department asked Facebook and Twitter to delete a newspaper article that it felt contained errors – but both social-media giants denied the request. Documents say that staff at the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, which reports to Parliament through the immigration minister but is otherwise an independent body, believed the article contained “serious errors of fact risking [and] undermining public confidence in the independence of the board as well as the integrity of the refugee determination system.”
