Souhaitant approfondir sa compréhension des enjeux touchant les nouveaux arrivants francophones en situation minoritaire, des chercheurs lanceront prochainement un Observatoire sur l’immigration francophone. Celui-ci pourrait, dès novembre, devenir une plateforme de diffusion des connaissances en matière d’immigration francophone. À son arrivée à l’Université de l’Ontario français (UOF) en 2019, la professeure Linda Cardinal a amorcé de vastes consultations auprès de plusieurs organismes francophones en contexte minoritaire pour déterminer quels créneaux de recherche devait développer l’université.

A young Toronto father facing deportation to Romania “felt he’d run out of options” and “must have been very desperate” when he made the fatal decision to flee with his wife and two young children to the United States on the frigid St. Lawrence River, says his lawyer. On Tuesday afternoon, immigration lawyer Peter Ivanyi told CTV News Toronto that his clients, Florin and Monalisa Iordache, were scheduled to report to Pearson International Airport on March 29 for removal from the country.

Al Jazeera – Family Found Dead Trying to Reach US Faced Removal from Canada

A family of four found dead trying to reach the United States by boat from Canada last week had been told they would be deported to their native Romania, Canadian media outlets have reported. Florin and Cristina lordache and their two young children – aged two and one – were among eight people found dead in the St Lawrence River near the US-Canada border on Thursday and Friday.

Globe and Mail – Niagara Region Warns Lack of Provincial Funding for Asylum Seekers Stretching Resources

Ontario’s Niagara region is warning it is $5.1-million short in money from the provincial government to adequately respond to an influx of asylum seekers. Without it, officials say the region could be forced to reduce the amount and frequency of discretionary benefits provided to people in need through the Ontario Works program, including rent support to transition families out of hotels and into permanent housing.

Toronto Star – Romanian Migrants Who Died in Akwesasne Had Tried to Claim Asylum in Canada Twice

A Romanian man who perished in the St. Lawrence River with his young family last week twice came to Canada for asylum and was arrested by American authorities when trying to sneak into the U.S. to join his siblings there. For five years, Florin Iordache was desperate to start a new life. He risked his personal safety all while starting a family with his partner as they struggled to find a new country to call home.
