A Nova Scotia organization that resettles LGBTQ refugees is adding its voice to calls for the federal government to make it easier for transgender and non-binary Americans to seek asylum in Canada. This comes amid a slew of anti-LGBTQ legislation that was recently passed in the United States, including Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law, Alabama’s ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth and Tennessee’s new anti-drag law, which prohibits drag performances in front of children.

When Joy Thompson’s boss introduced her to the owners of a Toronto-based employment agency in late 2018, Thompson felt the dream of bringing her two daughters to Canada was finally about to come true.
Thompson jumped at the opportunity when Rose and Bert Smith, co-owners of Apex Connection Corp., told her they could help get them Canadian visas. But almost five years later, her daughters are still not in Canada, after their arrangement with the agency evolved into a dispute and the family found themselves with nowhere to turn for recourse.

Le sénateur Yuen Pau Woo se demande si le « registre des agents d’influence étrangers » proposé à Ottawa ne pourrait pas devenir « une forme moderne d’exclusion chinoise » – et il souligne que la réaction de colère suscitée par cette suggestion prouve son point de vue sur le profilage racial et la stigmatisation. Toutefois, certains militants qui ont participé à des campagnes pour réparer les torts de la taxe d’entrée du Canada sur les immigrants chinois et de la Loi de l’immigration chinoise de 1923 contestent fortement cette comparaison historique.
Radio-Canada – Un accord avec Ottawa permet d’accueillir plus d’immigrants en Saskatchewan
La Saskatchewan et le gouvernement fédéral ont conclu un accord pour augmenter le nombre de candidats à l’immigration dans le Programme des candidats des provinces (PCP). Cette année, la province pourra accueillir environ 18 000 nouveaux arrivants, ce qui comprend les candidats, leurs conjoints et les personnes sous leurs responsabilités. Lundi, Jeremy Harrison a annoncé que le nombre de personnes qui seront admises au Programme des candidats immigrants de la Saskatchewan (PCIS) augmentera progressivement.
