Matthew House is a non-profit that has seven homes it uses to house people at various points in their immigration journey, and helps them access other services.

A B.C. woman who fled Afghanistan last year was finally reunited with her beloved dog at the Peace Arch border crossing in Surrey on Saturday morning. Freshta Siddiqui last saw Lucky — a three-year old Anatolian Shepherd — when she sent him and her cat Leo on a plane full of pets, chartered by the Society for the Prevention and Cruelty of Animals (SPCA) International, from Kabul to Vancouver in February 2022.

They were fleeing the prospect of retaliation by the hard-line Islamist regime for their years of working with NATO troops, including Canadian forces. Two weeks before the Taliban’s takeover, Mohammad Azimi, 34, a former psychologist who was working through the Afghan health ministry to help drug addicts, had gone to the Hungarian embassy in Pakistan for a visa interview.

After fleeing India to escape domestic abuse at the hands of her former spouse, Nitasha Nijhawan worked day and night to make ends meet in Sydney, N.S., her new home. She’s working on a website to help other international students with their resumes and online profiles on platforms like LinkedIn. The site is called edipulse, which is still a work in progress — as of early March 2023 many of the links and templates on the site were not up and running.
