CBC News – Gender Inequality Driving Wave of Female Japanese Immigrants to Canada

Yuka Yamamoto Woods, 40, is one of the nearly 14,000 women who have emigrated from Japan to Canada over the past two decades. This accounts for 76 per cent of all Japanese immigrants during that period, census data shows. And the entrenched gender inequality in Japan is a compelling reason for many to leave, according to some of those who have emigrated — including a University of Toronto social work professor.

Toronto Star – Why These Academics Say Canada Needs to Stop Hosting Global Conferences

Canadian academia should stop hosting major international conferences until the federal government can sort out visa problems that are preventing some of the world’s best and brightest from showing up and taking part. That’s the contention by a group of six dozen scholars who say they’ve been ashamed and frustrated by this country’s inability to process visitor visas for presenters and participants in a timely manner, as was evident at a recent conference on computer systems and architecture in Montreal.

CBC News – Quebec’s Regions Short 18,000 Foreign Workers to Meet Labour Needs

The labour shortage in the Quebec’s rural regions is likely to worsen in the coming years due to a lack of foreign workers, according to a study by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. Each year, small- and medium-sized businesses are short nearly 18,000 immigrants workers. The shortage impacts all regions, but those that are likely to be most affected are the Montérégie, with a projected deficit of 4,845 workers, the Laurentians, expected to be short 2,840 workers, and Lanaudière, short 2,186.

CityNews – Immigration Department Has ‘More Than Enough’ Staff to Meet Processing Goals: PBO

The federal government has “more than enough” staff to process applications for economic immigrants on time, the parliamentary budget officer says in a new report. Yves Giroux says his office analyzed the cost of processing applications for economic immigrants through the express entry system for five fiscal years. For the 2022-23 fiscal year, the report said Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has 65 per cent more staff than needed to process applications on time.

Un demi-million de migrants pourraient obtenir leur résidence permanente, du jamais-vu dans l’histoire du Canada. Le gouvernement Trudeau multiplie les rencontres avec les organismes qui œuvrent auprès de migrants afin de mettre « rapidement » en œuvre son souhait de régulariser des centaines de milliers de sans-papiers, a appris Radio-Canada. Selon nos informations, ce programme, d’une ampleur historique sans précédent, pourrait même être dévoilé d’ici l’été, selon l’échéancier communiqué à plusieurs de ces organismes par des représentants d’Immigration Canada.

Radio-Canada – Le ministre de l’Immigration Sean Fraser se rend à Washington mardi

Le ministre fédéral de l’Immigration, Sean Fraser, se déplace à Washington mardi pour y rencontrer le secrétaire à la Sécurité intérieure des États-Unis, Alejandro Mayorkas. L’information, d’abord publiée par TVA Nouvelles, a été confirmée en fin de soirée lundi par Radio-Canada. Fraser et Mayorkas discuteront des enjeux d’immigration, du chemin Roxham et de l’Entente sur les tiers pays sûrs. L’an dernier, un nombre record de 39 171 personnes ont traversé irrégulièrement la frontière au chemin Roxham, selon le nombre d’interceptions rapportées par la Gendarmerie royale du Canada.
