La ville de Winnipeg a accueilli, jeudi, le Sommet sur la santé des immigrants francophones de l’Ouest et du nord du Canada. L’objectif de cette rencontre est de proposer des formations pour les professionnels de la santé et du domaine social afin de mieux les équiper pour un meilleur accompagnement des personnes immigrantes. L’événement est organisé par l’organisme Santé en français, en collaboration avec le Réseau en immigration francophone du Manitoba (RIF).
CBC News – Cornwall, Ont., Needs Resources to Support Influx of Asylum Seekers, Mayor Says
Cornwall is unable to meet the needs of its growing population of asylum seekers, local officials say, and the eastern Ontario city is looking to recoup costs it believes the federal government has downloaded onto the municipality. That city and the surrounding United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry are currently covering half the administrative costs for all provincial support programs for asylum seekers in the city, according to Cornwall Mayor Justin Towndale.
Toronto Star – Nova Scotia Says a Record Number of Immigrants Became Permanent Residents in 2022
Opposition parties in Nova Scotia say they’re concerned the province lacks the housing and health-care resources to support newcomers as immigration to the province reaches new highs. Jill Balser, minister of labour, skills and immigration, said Thursday that a record 12,650 new permanent residents made Nova Scotia their home last year, surpassing the 2021 total by 38 per cent.
Toronto Star – Turkish, Syrian Students Say U Of T Not Addressing Trauma from Earthquake
In the days that have followed the earthquake, Turkish and Syrian students in this country have been scrambling to collect donations and hold fundraising events to raise awareness and support the aid efforts. On their own spontaneous effort, Can Ay, a math and economics student at the University of Toronto, said the students collected 100 boxes of winter supplies and raised $10,000 through bake sales and other events. But some say they have felt alone in their efforts, while others complain the university has not provided enough support.

Des conseils scolaires francophones de l’Ontario ont vu leur nombre d’élèves gonfler grâce à l’arrivée de demandeurs d’asile en provenance du Québec. Une situation qui réjouit plusieurs intervenants, le poids démographique des francophones étant en décroissance dans la province depuis plusieurs années. Le directeur des services aux nouveaux arrivants du Centre de santé communautaire Hamilton/Niagara, Bonaventure Otshudi, soutient que la communauté francophone de sa région « se frotte les mains » en voyant le nombre de nouveaux élèves.
Radio-Canada – La Saskatchewan a de la difficulté à retenir ses immigrants
Le Nouveau Parti démocratique (NPD) de la Saskatchewan appelle le gouvernement provincial à s’attaquer aux problèmes de rétention des immigrants dans la province. Entre les années 2010 et 2020, le taux de rétention des immigrants au niveau national a baissé de 10 points de pourcentage. En Saskatchewan, ce taux a chuté d’environ 20 points de pourcentage, au cours de la même période.Pour la cheffe du NPD de la Saskatchewan, Carla Beck, il s’agit d’un problème auquel le gouvernement saskatchewanais doit immédiatement trouver une solution.
