The catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake that slammed southwestern Asia is adding to the misery of Syrian refugees who fled to Turkiye to escape civil war. There are more than 3.5 million registered refugees in Turkiye, many of whom live along the border straddling Turkiye and Syria near the epicentre of Monday’s quake, which has decimated the region.
Internationally trained doctors are being sidelined in Canada while six million Canadians do not have a family doctor. The project emerged from Trained To Save Lives, a social media campaign about the role of internationally educated health-care professionals in British Columbia’s COVID-19 response. We conducted interviews with 11 internationally trained doctors in B.C. While this study was conducted in B.C., the findings highlight licensing barriers for internationally trained doctors across Canada.

Wahid Ibrahimi’s family gathered in a hotel room in Ottawa on Wednesday evening, exhausted but incredibly relieved, after months of struggling to survive in Pakistan while they waited to come to Canada. Just a few months ago, the family’s spirits were at their lowest. They are from Afghanistan, where Mr. Ibrahimi worked as a security guard at the Canadian embassy in Kabul until summer 2021.

Several Ukrainian refugees in Southwestern Ontario are in mourning after the recent death of a friend and fellow refugee who moved to the Stratford area last year from Poland after escaping war in the Ukraine. Raman Kotvytskyi and Vlocolyslocv Supranenko – close friends with Oleksandr Buzenko since they were in college together more than a decade ago – said Buzenko, 26, was among the first to immigrate to Canada last year through a Stackpole International program.
