Toronto Star – Mindset of Those Present When Immigration Detainee Died Is Key, Inquest Hears

It’s taken more than seven years for the facts about Abdurahman Ibrahim Hassan’s death to come out after he died in a struggle while in custody at a hospital on June 11, 2015. On the one hand, advocates, pushing for a homicide verdict, portrayed a young black man from war-torn Somalia, a refugee struggling with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and PTSD, failed by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), Ontario’s correctional system, the hospital staff who cared for him and the police tasked with guarding him.

Globe and Mail – Immigration Minister Has ‘Serious Concerns’ About Inauthentic Canadian Travel Documents Sent to Afghans

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser told MPs Wednesday he has “serious concerns” that Afghans desperate to flee the Taliban were misled when they were sent inauthentic Canadian travel documents, leaving them with the mistaken belief that they had been cleared to come to Canada. Mr. Fraser made the comments at a hearing of the House of Commons immigration committee, which is considering launching a probe into unauthorized facilitation letters.

CBC News – Why Some Migrants Turn Around and Head Back to NYC After Free Bus Ride to Near Canadian Border

At the Port Authority in New York City, Ilze Thielmann greets would-be refugees as they step off buses.  Many of them were put on buses in southern U.S. states, where officials say they are unable to deal with the deepening migrant crisis. Thielmann’s non-profit organization, Team TLC, and others like it get funding from New York City to help those new arrivals get where they want to go. The process is called “re-ticketing.” Many of them want to go north, to Plattsburgh, N.Y. — the closest town to Roxham Road, an irregular border crossing into Canada used by asylum seekers.
