Globe and Mail – Parliament Votes in Favour of Accepting Uyghur Refugees Fleeing China
Members of Parliament have voted unanimously to support a motion calling on the Canadian government to accept 10,000 Uyghurs fleeing persecution in China. Those backing the motion Wednesday included members of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet, including Mr. Trudeau himself. In 2021, Mr. Trudeau’s cabinet had abstained from a previous motion in Parliament that condemned China’s repression of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims as genocide.

Au printemps 2020, Québec promettait de recruter 550 préposés aux bénéficiaires par année à l’étranger. Bilan de l’opération ? Le programme pilote en immigration mis sur pied pour l’occasion n’a sélectionné jusqu’ici que 78 candidats, a-t-on appris dans des documents obtenus grâce à la Loi sur l’accès aux documents des organismes publics. Invité à expliquer les insuccès du programme, le ministère de l’Immigration a d’abord tenté de minimiser l’échec en présentant le nombre de 550 comme « un seuil maximum » plutôt qu’une cible, contredisant ainsi l’ancien ministre Jolin-Barrette.

L’information a fait surface au premier jour de l’enquête en comité parlementaire sur la centaine de millions de dollars en contrats accordés à la firme de consultants par le gouvernement fédéral. La fiche ne précise pas quel montant le gouvernement doit débourser. Il est plutôt écrit qu’il s’agit d’un contrat de 0 $ pour des services professionnels en informatique.

Après avoir exigé des excuses, le ministre québécois responsable de la Laïcité et des Relations canadiennes, Jean-François Roberge, a demandé lundi la démission de la représentante spéciale pour la lutte contre l’islamophobie au gouvernement fédéral, Amira Elghawaby. La journaliste et militante des droits de la personne a dû clarifier vendredi ses déclarations passées au sujet de la Loi sur la laïcité de l’État. Dans une chronique datant de 2019, elle dénonçait le sentiment antimusulman qui aurait entouré, selon elle, l’adoption par Québec de la loi 21.

The looming return of alleged ISIS members to Canada has brought trauma, worry and fear to people who were invited to Canada as a safe haven after the terrorist group all but destroyed their ancient community in northern Iraq. “When I first heard the news, I felt the strength leave my body,” Huda Ilyas Alhamad told CBC News in her Winnipeg apartment. She is one of 1,200 survivors of the Yazidi genocide who were resettled in Canada; she spent years as a slave of ISIS members.
