The largest Canadian banks have spent years building and honing offerings for newcomers to Canada, as well as referral networks to reach them before they arrive. That’s for good reason: A large majority of banks’ new customers are immigrants, far eclipsing the growth that comes from young adults growing up, or established clients switching financial institutions.
In the basement of the Ukrainian National Federation in Montreal, Anastasiia Solianyk stands in a circle with other women, swaying gently to the music. It’s a grey Saturday morning in December, and she’s at her weekly therapeutic dance class. One year after the federal government vowed to do more to give status to undocumented workers, Canada is pressing forward with deporting a personal support worker, separating her from her child and sending her back to the country from which she says she ran for her life. Fatumah Najjuma, a 29-year-old, fled Uganda while pregnant in 2018 after she says she was disowned by her family and her life was put in danger for her religious and social affiliations.
For many newcomers to Canada, the first winter can be harsh and cold. That’s why Alex Rand and his team at the Bentway wanted to offer a different winter experience for new immigrants arriving in Greater Toronto. The Bentway, a not-for-profit that runs a skate trail, events and activities under a stretch of the Gardiner Expressway near the Fort York area, has launched its “First Winter” programs to explore newcomers’ experiences of Toronto’s cold season.
Few Canadians appreciate the depths of chocolate’s moral virtues better than Tareq Hadhad, 30, the Syrian war refugee whose new chocolate store has just opened on Main Street in Antigonish, N.S., supplied by his factory out in the county, which is staffed by 77 people, of whom about a dozen are Ukrainian war refugees. This newly outfitted industrial chocolate operation replaces the smaller shed in town, built by volunteers who in 2016 welcomed Hadhad, his siblings and parents, and set them on the path to entrepreneurial success.
