Seven years after Canada opened its doors to Syrian refugees, that first cohort of newcomers say they feel good about their new lives, have remained friends with their sponsors and are hopeful for a better future. However, many still struggle with finding gainful employment, according to a two-year research project by the Environics Institute.
Manuel Rodriguez, his wife and their 19-year-old son are finally able to step outside and do something as simple as going for a short walk in Sherbrooke, Que., without running the risk of being arrested and then deported. This week, the family learned that the warrant for their arrest has been lifted. The family has also been given a temporary resident permit (TRP) and will not have to worry about deportation for 18 months.

Tens of thousands of toys will be delivered to less fortunate families in Ottawa this Christmas thanks to Toy Mountain. Some of these gifts will hold special meaning when they arrive in the hands of Ukrainian refugees. Natalia Kuksa and her nine-year-old son Ivan have been in Canada for seven months, escaping the war in Ukraine. “It’s our first Christmas in Canada,” Kuksa said.

L’éducation au sujet des avantages que les employés francophones apportent à leur entreprise peut aussi aider à lutter contre la pénurie de main-d’œuvre dans la région. Ce sont les principaux constats d’un nouveau rapport publié par l’Institut des politiques du Nord (IPN). On peut lire dans le rapport que ces efforts peuvent contribuer à augmenter les possibilités d’emploi pour des francophones, le nombre d’embauches et la satisfaction générale au travail.

Pendant longtemps, la province avait pour but d’attirer 7 % d’immigrants francophones chaque année. Cette cible ambitieuse avait été fixée en 2003 par le gouvernement néo-démocrate de Gary Doer et elle n’a jamais été atteinte. Or, selon des documents relatifs au conseil consultatif sur l’immigration obtenus grâce à une demande d’accès à l’information, le Manitoba n’a pas adopté formellement de cible d’immigration francophone. Ce détail est caché au milieu des 420 pages fournies en réponse à la demande d’accès à l’information, dont de nombreuses sont caviardées.

This hotel is one of several across the Pakistani capital where Afghans approved for resettlement in Canada stay while they complete their applications and wait to hear when they will be offered flights. Some have been living in single rooms for a year or more, watching others leave and wondering why they have been left behind.
