Government statistics show fewer than one-third of Ukrainians approved for temporary Canadian visas have arrived in the country, even as hundreds of thousands of others remain in the queue waiting to find out if they qualify to travel to Canada. The temporary visas are part of the special immigration measures introduced by the federal government in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine giving Ukrainians emergency authorization to travel and stay in Canada.

CBC News – Toronto Job Fair for Refugees Brings Together Newcomers with Major Employers
At the Toronto Refugee Hiring Event in Metro Hall, more than 200 refugees registered for interviews with a dozen employers. Some got a job offer on the spot, others got a second interview, and still others were flagged for future job opportunities. Job seekers also got access to a “coaching corner” where they were able to receive interview tips from employment consultants.

Les demandeurs d’asile n’auront plus à attendre de longs mois afin d’obtenir un permis de travail. Immigration Canada a annoncé cette semaine avoir adopté une nouvelle approche pour accélérer le traitement des permis de travail accordés aux demandeurs d’asile. Jusqu’ici, ceux-ci devaient d’abord détenir le document de demandeur d’asile (DDA), délivré par un agent des services frontaliers du Canada. Selon la nouvelle procédure simplifiée annoncée par Ottawa, le DDA pourra maintenant être accordé aux demandeurs d’asile « selon les renseignements fournis par le demandeur dans sa demande », c’est-à-dire au début du processus.

But Canada has strong competition from Europe, the U.S. and other countries that are also mounting aggressive recruitment campaigns touting high wages and immigration opportunities: health workers can get cheap U.K. visas, while the Australian state of Victoria offers “relocation packages” for foreign nurses, equivalent to as much as $11,670 Cdn.
