The United Voices: Immigrant Youth Wellness Summit is the first southern Alberta mental-health summit geared towards newcomer youth, created in part in response to the 2019 suicide of a nine-year-old Syrian refugee who took her life after being bullied at school.

Statistics Canada predicts the country will continue its growth in the coming decades, to between 42.9 million and 52.5 million by 2043, from 38.2 million in 2021. Given demographic trends, that growth can only be achieved through immigration, but experts say our existing process for integrating newcomers needs to be more effective.

They say an influx this year in newcomers from places like Afghanistan and Ukraine means they need more help than usual keeping them warm through their first winter here.

Basel Abou Hamrah still remembers seeing the rainbow flags at the front desk when he arrived at the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers. The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers was established in 1980 as a hub for language, employment and immigration services. At the centre, Abou Hamrah found help learning English and a job as a settlement practitioner. He went on to establish the Rainbow Refuge program, supporting newcomers and refugees.
