Hamilton Spectator – Arabic Is the Most Spoken Nonofficial Language in Hamilton: Census Data
Mohammad Araf, program officer at the Hamilton Immigration Partnership Council, attributed the relatively new shift in nonofficial languages to “immigration patterns and trends in recent years.” In the 2016 census — the first year Arabic became the language most spoken at home after English in the Hamilton area — more newcomers were coming from the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, which in Araf’s opinion, explains the growing diversity of languages. An increased number of Syrian refugees over the last decade also added to the demographic of Arabic speakers.

Two hotels in Calgary are now filled with government-sponsored refugees — some stuck as the tight rental market makes it tough to secure private accommodation and move on. They’re priced out, says Afghan refugee Fatima Tabish, who invited CBC Calgary to visit her temporary community at the hotel just off Macleod Trail. The federal government covers rent for the first year while refugees find their feet and secure a job. But Tabish is finding the $1,200 allowance just isn’t enough in the current rental market.
Toronto Star – Heartbreak and Hope as 177 Ukrainians Fleeing Russian Attacks Arrive in Newfoundland
The plane that landed Tuesday at St. John’s International Airport was the third such airlift to be arranged by the Newfoundland and Labrador government. The province has been working hard to bring Ukrainians fleeing the war to resettle in Canada’s easternmost province. It even set up a satellite office in Warsaw, Poland, in March to help Ukrainians relocate.

When a deportation order was issued to Halima Abdi three months ago, the Edmonton woman went into hiding — living apart from her husband and three Canadian-born children — in hopes of avoiding a more drastic separation. Sali Mohamed, another Edmonton mother, is familiar with the heartbreaking situation Abdi is going through, having spent almost four years separated from her husband and two children before her immigration application was approved. Now Mohamed and other community advocates are urging the federal government to halt Abdi’s deportation to Kenya.
