Depuis des mois, des politiciens répètent qu’il y a 177 000 immigrants temporaires au Québec. Or, Radio-Canada a découvert que ce nombre est peut-être largement sous-estimé et que, en réalité, le gouvernement n’a pas de portrait précis de la situation. Le nombre de 177 000 a pourtant été avancé avec assurance en juin dernier par le ministre québécois de l’Immigration, Jean Boulet, comme une preuve qu’Ottawa doit donner à Québec les pleins pouvoirs en matière d’immigration.

Opposition parties and aid groups say the Trudeau government is dragging its feet in carving out exemptions to anti-terrorism laws to allow humanitarian groups to reach desperate people in Afghanistan. “There is nothing but political will interfering with us solving this problem,” said NDP foreign affairs critic Heather McPherson. In June, a multi-party committee called on the government to modify the Criminal Code so that major humanitarian groups can help Afghans without being charged with assisting the Taliban.
