Farzana Adell Ghadiya, who is in an undisclosed third country, was rejected for a visitor’s visa when she had actually applied for a Temporary Resident Permit for Protection (TRP), her supporters say.
“She did not apply for a temporary resident visa. She applied for a TRP,” said Matthew Behrens, co-ordinator of the Rural Refugee Rights Network. It was shocking that immigration officials seemed not to have fully read Adell Ghadiya’s application, which laid out the threats she faces if she returned to Afghanistan, Behrens said.

A fashion model from Myanmar who feared being arrested by the country’s military government if she was forced back home from exile has flown to Canada, which she says has granted her asylum. Thaw Nandar Aung, also known as Han Lay, left on a flight from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport early Wednesday morning, according to Archayon Kraithong, a deputy commissioner of Thailand’s Immigration Bureau. He said he was not authorized to reveal her destination.

Under agreements with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), many provinces imprison migrants for administrative reasons, a practice that violates international law. Alex, a fictitious name CBC has given him for security reasons, says he underwent several strip searches during his detention in the provincial jail of Rivière-des-Prairies in Montreal. This foreign national, who was not charged with any crime, spent about six months behind bars last year. His case is far from unique.

As of July 1, the number of people living in Canada sat at an estimated 38.9 million, an increase of 0.7 per cent, or 284,982 people, from April 1, 2022. The estimate, marking the highest pace of quarterly growth since 1957, represents an increase of more than 3,100 people per day. According to Statistics Canada, international migration accounted for 94.5 per cent of this growth, an increase of 269,305 people.

Quebec’s immigration and labour minister claims that newcomers to the province “go to Montreal, don’t work, and don’t speak French,” though he later tweeted he expressed “his thoughts badly.” The Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) candidate for Trois-Rivières and favourite to maintain the seat, Jean Boulet, made the comments when he was asked about his portfolio during a debate on Radio-Canada. He added the CAQ government has set up nine regional directors to help immigrants settle in Quebec, learn French, and assimilate into the province.
