A donation of emergency housing from Airbnb.org is helping Canadian immigration agencies to connect incoming Afghan refugees and displaced Ukrainians with temporary homes. With the donation, the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) is working with the Canadian Immigrant Settlement Sector Alliance (CISSA-ACSEI) to secure temporary housing for newcomers from Ukraine and Afghanistan, which is essential as more arrive in Canada.

For Ukrainian children and youth coming to the London area, the prospect of a new classroom can be a daunting experience and a time of great apprehension. At One World, the welcoming centre set up by the Thames Valley District school board for international students, staff have assessed and helped 123 Ukrainian students enter the school system so far this year, said Sarah Leeming, the board’s education lead for international students.

Kyle and Pia MacDonald of Cable Head East, P.E.I., hope that by sharing their story, more Canadians will step up to help Ukrainian refugees. MacDonald said that he and his wife, Pia, connected with Ana Losieva from Mykolaiv, Ukraine, on Facebook. She arrived in B.C. in the spring and was looking to move to eastern Canada. She settled in at their home in July and has already had a profound impact on their family, said MacDonald.
