Canada is on track to exceed its immigration goal of granting permanent residency to more than 430,000 people in 2022, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said on Wednesday. Fraser, speaking to reporters in Vancouver, also announced a plan to hire up to 1,250 workers to tackle a record high number of immigration applicants.

Volodymyr Saiko, his wife Olena and their two-year-old daughter Zlata applied in April to come to Canada with their cat after fleeing their hometown near Mariupol, one of the most bombed cities in Ukraine since the start of the war in February. Since then, the family has been waiting for a resolution to their visa application, receiving from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) no other answer about their process than they have to keep waiting, said Jody Brouwer, a Strathroy resident who will be hosting the Saikos family.

La langue française a connu un recul important au Canada et dans le Nord Ontario entre 2016 et 2021. Les données sur la langue du recensement de 2021, présentées le 17 aout par Statistique Canada, présentent une diminution évidente du nombre de francophones et de leur poids démographique dans la région. L’explication est simple : l’anglais et les autres langues ont progressé plus rapidement.

Le ministre de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté, Sean Fraser, a admis mercredi que des demandes de visas présentées après que les restrictions de voyage eurent été assouplies, en septembre 2021, sont priorisées par son ministère. Les demandes présentées par des personnes dispensées des restrictions de voyage liées à la COVID-19 alors en vigueur, comme les membres de la famille des Canadiens et des travailleurs essentiels, ont été priorisées entre mars 2020 et le 6 septembre 2021.

Les importants délais en immigration au Canada pourraient s’allonger encore avant de s’améliorer, admet le ministre de l’Immigration, Sean Fraser. Prenant la parole à partir de la Colombie-Britannique, le ministre de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté a annoncé l’embauche de plus de 1250 nouveaux fonctionnaires d’ici l’automne pour tenter de régler les importants arriérés du système et émettre des documents d’immigration dans les normes de service « d’ici la fin de l’année ».

Canada’s immigration minister now projects it will only take a few months longer than originally hoped to get application wait times back on track, even though the crisis in Ukraine and other “external” events have worsened the backlogs. In January, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser vowed to eliminate backlogs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic by the end of the year. That was before Canada launched a major response to the refugee crisis sparked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and approved hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians and their families to come to Canada temporarily to escape the war.
