In the December 2021 mandate letter to the newly appointed Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Liberal government tasked him with exploring “ways of regularizing status for undocumented workers who are contributing to Canadian communities.” Sean Fraser has since said he’s working on designing a regularization program that can help address this issue.

But for recent immigrants to Canada, there are myriad barriers to accessing its financial system, from misconceptions about how credit markets work to unfamiliarity with digital banking practices to finding a place to live.
The Association for New Canadians is using a new art exhibit at Memorial University’s Botanical Garden in St. John’s to spread awareness about human trafficking in Newfoundland and Labrador. The exhibit, which opened this month, showcases 14 painted doors, each designed by a different artist or group. People involved with a program supporting trafficking survivors run by the Association for New Canadians — called Support, Empower, Access — designed one of the doors.

At just 20, Ukrainian refugee Yana Shkliaruk has already experienced a lifetime of events — love, marriage, career, motherhood, war and widowhood. And last week she, along with her mother, Yuliia Somina, and twenty-month-old baby Yeva , was denied entry to Canada over a typo by a Polish airport clerk on the baby’s boarding pass.

Trois universités québécoises offrent ou offriront sous peu un cours sur le profilage racial, le premier du genre au Canada. « Tout est à faire » dans ce domaine du droit, selon l’un des instigateurs de la formation. L’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) a emboîté le pas à l’Université d’Ottawa et offre ce cours cet été. L’Université McGill le donnera cet automne, tandis que l’hiver prochain, c’est l’Université de Montréal qui proposera ces leçons à ses étudiants. Ce cours de droit, monté avec la collaboration de Rhita Harim, est destiné aux juristes, rappelle Me Belton.
