Le premier des trois vols nolisés devant transporter au Canada des réfugiés ukrainiens fuyant l’invasion russe a atterri au Manitoba lundi après-midi. Le ministre de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté, Sean Fraser, affirme que les trois vols devaient contribuer à amener environ 900 Ukrainiens pour un séjour d’urgence au Canada. Le deuxième vol d’avion partira pour Montréal depuis la Pologne le 29 mai et le troisième, à destination d’Halifax, décollera le 2 juin.

The flight from Warsaw, Poland landed around 3:45 p.m. Winnipeg time, with 350 passengers and some pets on board. Premier Heather Stefanson was at the airport to welcome the Ukrainian arrivals. In March, the provincial government established a task force dedicated to coordinating the arrival of Ukrainians and to establish services to help them transition to life in Manitoba.

The flight from Warsaw to Winnipeg, which touched down at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport around 3:45 p.m., was the first of three charter flights to Canadian cities. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser has said the flights will bring approximately 900 Ukrainians approved for emergency travel into Canada.

Monday marks the 108th anniversary of the Komagata Maru incident, which led to the deaths of more than a dozen people. The Komagata Maru was a steamship that brought 376 Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus of South Asian origin to Vancouver. These people hoped to settle in Canada, but instead were turned away “due to the racist and discriminatory laws of the time,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

When Saeeq Shajjan, the founder and managing partner of the Kabul law firm Shajjan & Associates, fled Afghanistan and made it safely to Toronto in early September, he thought his colleagues would not be far behind. Almost nine months later, Mr. Shajjan says his former co-workers are becoming increasingly anxious at the prospect of being abandoned, with no clear path to Canada. There are 28 lawyers and employees who worked for Shajjan & Associates.

Depuis un an, Desjardins a bonifié ses rangs de 2000 travailleurs étrangers d’une quinzaine de nationalités différentes. Et d’ici 2025, l’institution compte en accueillir le double, grâce à son nouveau Centre d’accompagnement en matière d’immigration (CAMI), lancé ce mois-ci, facilitant les processus administratifs pour s’établir au Québec. Le CAMI permet de faire d’une pierre deux coups : recruter des travailleurs étrangers temporaires, d’ici et ailleurs, tout en les épaulant à travers leur intégration.
