Dozens gathered outside a Metro Vancouver school Monday night protesting what they call flaws in Canada’s immigration system. The rally outside an elementary school in New Westminster was in support of a family facing deportation to Mexico 13 years after they fled the country. The couple made a refugee claim when they first arrived in Canada, but that claim was denied.
Khushal is one of many Afghans who worked as interpreters for the Canadian military during its mission in Afghanistan and who now, as a result, face retaliation from the Taliban. His captors let him go after his family promised not to leave the country – but, fearing for their safety, they broke that pledge. He and some of his relatives are now in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital.

Defence chief Gen. Wayne Eyre told a parliamentary committee Monday night that the Defence Department had checked and verified the credentials of 3,800 Afghans, including interpreters, who supported the Canadian military. But the committee heard from Eyre and Bill Matthews, deputy defence minister, that only 900 of them have had their applications to come to Canada accepted so far by the Immigration Department.
A group of volunteers in Stratford has reinstated its program that helps vulnerable refugees from around the world settle in Canada. The Stratford Welcomes Refugees program started in 2015 but was put on hold during the pandemic creating a backlog for the organization. Over the years, families have come from countries like Afghanistan,Somalia, Sudan — and Syria where Lina Hmidi and her family came from.

Le PDSB rétorque qu’il est conscient du problème et qu’il est déterminé à le résoudre bien que les directives du ministère de l’Éducation visant à combattre le racisme et la discrimination ne mentionnent pas spécifiquement l’ALS.
