Canada’s military is not yet ready to allow permanent residents to join its ranks, even as it struggles to boost recruitment and fix the growing diversity gap in the nation’s armed forces. In response to a request from New Canadian Media, ahead of the inaugural Navy Fleet Weekend in Vancouver, numbers provided by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAD) show that three-quarters of its ranks are white men.
Newcomers are finding ways to connect with Indigenous people through programs and workshops at the Regina Open Door Society (RODS). For seven years, RODS had been running programs to bridge the gap between newcomers to Canada and Indigenous culture. For example, the Youth Bridges program allows newcomers to connect with Indigenous youth and learn about the culture through activities while exploring traditions and history.

Jim Estill, a sponsorship agreement holder with the government, has asked to bring 300 people to Canada. So far, he’s been told he can only sponsor 40. Estill said he’s a big supporter of private sponsorships because it doesn’t cost the government as much money and the resettlement process is easier. The Danby Appliances chief executive officer helps them find work and housing when they come to a community. He just needs the people to come.
