A Nova Scotian who will soon be opening her doors to temporarily host a Ukrainian refugee family is calling on the federal government to waive costly medical screening fees upon their arrival. “(They) have spent every penny that they’ve got, fleeing from their home, and getting flights here. And then all of the sudden, they’ve got to find another $1,200,” Vanessa Powell said.
CTV News – Canada Launches Aeroplan Fund to Bring Ukrainians to Canada
Canadians can now give cash or Aeroplan points to help bring Ukrainians fleeing the war with Russia to safety in Canada. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser says the goal is to pay for flights to bring at least 10,000 Ukrainians and their families approved for travel to Canada. These would be on top of targeted chartered flights to bring Ukrainians to Canada announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier this year.

Five months pregnant and stranded in Pakistan on a now-expired visa, a former military interpreter and wife of a Canadian combat veteran was refused permission to travel to Canada because officials were concerned she’d overstay her visa. The interpreter, whom the National Post isn’t identifying out of concerns for her safety, made it out of a besieged Kabul last September with the help of her husband Eric, a former CAF member who completed two front-line rotations during Canada’s 14-year Afghanistan mission.

In a Montreal classroom for newcomers to Canada, 13-year-old Darina Galamay watches her teacher’s lips move as she speaks, but the sounds that come out are indecipherable to her. The Ukrainian teen, armed with only a few words of English and no French, uses a phone app to translate and make herself understood by her teacher, as well as by her classmates at École Secondaire Anjou. Despite the challenges, for Darina, just being in class — safe from the roar of military planes overhead — is a respite.

Ce qui a débuté comme une campagne de financement devant durer 30 jours pour venir en aide aux interprètes afghans fuyant les talibans s’est transformé en une opération douloureuse, chaotique et frustrante qui aura duré huit mois pour le Réseau de transition des vétérans (RTV). Le réseau mettra fin à sa campagne de financement le 2 mai, puis va continuer de réduire ses activités au cours de six prochains mois pour reporter son attention sur ses programmes de soutien en santé mentale pour les anciens combattants.
