The government has faced fierce criticism for the policy with questions raised over costs and impact as well as Rwanda’s human rights record.
Settlement agencies across the country have joined forces to support Ukrainians arriving through a federal emergency program at three airports, Canada’s immigration minister said Tuesday. Sean Fraser said 41,000 people have been approved through an emergency travel initiative launched last month to help people resettle after many fled to Europe to escape Russia’s war on Ukraine. They have been arriving at the Toronto and Edmonton international airports since April 1, and in Vancouver since April 8.

Canada will deploy up to 150 military personnel to Poland to support Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s war and address a growing refugee crisis, Defense Minister Anita Anand said on Thursday. Most of those military personnel will assist with the immediate care and processing of Ukrainian refugees at reception centers across Poland, Anand said. The Canadian Armed Forces members would also support a Polish-led task force for humanitarian assistance, and help resettle Ukrainians in Canada.

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine heads into its 50th day, Canada is inventing an entirely new way to get Ukrainian refugees here and support them when they arrive. “Settlement agencies and communities know how to settle people into those communities best,” said Sean Fraser, Canada’s minister of immigration.
Friends, family and community members gathered at an Etobicoke funeral home Tuesday to pay tribute to international student Kartik Vasudev, one of two men shot dead in Toronto last week in what police are calling “random” acts of violence. Those who spoke at the visitation told gatherers that Vasudev’s death has been incredibly painful, especially for immigrant communities who recognize the sacrifice it takes to send children abroad to pursue their goals and start a new life.
