Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is conducting a study to explore potential cultural bias shown by its employees when it comes to processing visa applications at the country’s points of entry, according to a department spokesperson. The study comes in response to a survey examining workplace racism at IRCC released last year that revealed multiple reports of racist “microagressions” by employees and supervisors.

International students move to Windsor attracted by the promise of opportunity and a better life. But for many, the rising cost of living — coupled with limited part-time job opportunities — is proving to be a challenge. “I probably get to work seven to 14 hours a week. Sometimes I don’t even get that,” said Albin Varghese. Varghese is an international student from India taking construction classes at St. Clair College. He said a lack of flexible part-time job opportunities is making it difficult to pay for essentials.

A Winnipeg man who fled Afghanistan more than two decades ago wants to see the federal government do more to help Afghans who are now trying to make it to Canada — including his sister. Mushtaqu Rahman arrived in Canada in 2004 after leaving Afghanistan in 1997 to escape the Taliban, who ruled the country at that point. Now that the Taliban have returned to power, Rahman says Canada needs a quicker process for the thousands of people desperate to get to Canada.
