1,700 international students have been left living in limbo in Canada after the CCSQ, along with M College in Montreal and CDE College in Sherbrooke, were granted creditor protection under the Companies’ Creditor Arrangements Act (CCAA) in early January. Permits for international students stipulate they cannot stay in Canada for more than 150 days without attending class. Their ability to work is also on pause.

Defence Minister Anita Anand says Canadian officials are “doing whatever we can to assist” Ukrainian refugees who are fleeing Russian violence. Speaking to CTV’s Your Morning on Friday, Anand said the Canadian Armed Forces are in Poland and prepared to help with the humanitarian effort as thousands of Ukrainians cross borders into neighbouring countries to escape the invasion.
Premier Doug Ford wants to fast-track potential Ukrainian refugees to Ontario, where he says jobs and settlement services will be waiting for them. Ford said Friday he’s discussing with Ottawa how his province can help resettle people who are fleeing the Russian invasion of neighbouring Ukraine. Canada has already promised to prioritize immigration applications from Ukraine.

It was a bittersweet moment when Beka Lomadze and his older sister Anna got their visas to resettle in Canada from Ukraine in 2019, but the siblings were hopeful their parents and two younger brothers would follow suit in the near future. In early February, a letter finally came from the Canadian visa post in Kyiv. To their dismay, immigration officials said they intended to refuse the family’s refugee sponsorship application because there’s a “durable solution,” given that they’ve already lived in Ukraine for 10 years.
