Throughout the pandemic, hospitals across the country have been seeing people who are in the midst of a mental health crisis. Among them was Ella, a foreign student from Nigeria studying science at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. The aspiring medical student, who asked CTV News not to use her last name, says she never had mental health problems before. But after almost a year of lockdowns, disrupted classes and isolation, the then-22 year old says she slipped into depression at the end of 2020 and felt suicidal.

He spent two years working alongside Canadian soldiers in Kandahar as an interpreter and a food-supply contractor. Weeks before Afghanistan fell to the Taliban last August, the 34-year-old man had already applied to Ottawa’s special programs to resettle former Afghan interpreters and locally engaged staff to Canada. The Department of National Defence confirmed his employment history on Aug. 25, and immediately forwarded his case to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for processing. Today, he’s in hiding in Kandahar, still waiting for immigration officials to assign him an application number.

The YMCA school settlement program works with students and their families throughout the region. And while it has been running for about 25 years, staff say its current work through spells of online school learning has been indispensable in a challenging time. Eighteen staff from the YMCA program work on site in HRM schools where they provide academic help along with a range of other supports.
CBC News – Recording Hate to Fight Hate — Racism Mapping Tool Launched in Surrey to Help Newcomers Feel Safe
A website designed to gather data around racism and hate incidents taking place in Surrey has been launched by a local immigration partnership made up of government, business, non-profit and community agencies. The Racism Mapping Project or RAMP, an initiative by the Surrey Local Immigration Partnership, will allow people to report incidents of hate anonymously in order to place them on a map to show the prevalence and location of such incidents in the city.
