Attia Elserafy said he feared for his safety after a military coup deposed President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. The family of seven went to Turkey before Elserafy, his wife and three of their children came to Canada, where they made refugee claims. Elserafy says the refugee application process has stalled because a report from an officer with Canada Border Services Agency pointed out links between the Freedom and Justice Party and Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood. Neither group appears on Canada’s list of terrorist entities. Speaking through a translator, Elserafy accused the Vancouver-based CBSA officer of discrimination and Islamophobia.

Many health-care workers breathed a sigh of relief when the Ontario government announced internationally-trained nurses will be deployed in hospitals across the province, but advocates warn it won’t be enough to make up for all the nurses who’ve left. They say the move, which comes almost two years into the pandemic, is coming too late to adequately address a nursing shortage that made itself felt long before COVID-19. According to a November brief from the RNAO, Ontario entered the COVID-19 pandemic nearly 22,000 registered nurses short.

National Post – Canada Pausing Intake of Highly Skilled Immigrant Workers Amid Heavy Backlog
Canada’s immigration system for high-skilled workers is severely backlogged and even amidst a labour shortage, the government is pausing new invitations because the department simply can’t process them quickly enough, according to a briefing document. Immigration lawyer Steven Meurrens obtained the document through access to information and provided it to the National Post. In the memo, department officials outline that “an estimated 76,000” applicants are in the inventory for federal high-skilled worker applications, which is more than what the government needs to meet targets all the way out to 2023.
Al Jazeera – Baby Among Four Found Dead Along US-Canada Border
Four people, including an infant, have been found dead in freezing conditions along the United States-Canada border after apparently being abandoned by human smugglers, authorities said. Officials on Thursday said the bodies of two adults and a baby were discovered a day earlier by the US border and about 10km (6 miles) from the town of Emerson in Canada’s central Manitoba province. Police said a fourth person – who appeared to be a teenage boy – was found dead nearby shortly after.
