The Accelerated Tech Pathway, which began accepting applications last month, has been added to the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program, Labour and Immigration Minister Tyler Shandro said Thursday, meaning that people like civil and mechanical engineers, medical laboratory technicians and graphic designers have the chance to have their application for permanent residency fast-tracked as a way of helping Alberta deal with labour shortages.

Canadian immigrants say they’ve been reaching out to their federal members of parliament (MPs) for help with their long-delayed immigration files. For some, it’s been years since they first opened their files with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). “MPs used to be the higher level to try and get additional information and even MPs aren’t getting responses,” noted immigration lawyer Tamara Mosher-Kuczer.

A newly announced pause on the arrival of temporary foreign workers in Windsor-Essex amid the Omicron surge is expected to come at a cost for vegetable growers in southwestern Ontario. Joe Sbrocchi, general manager of Ontario Greenhouse and Vegetable Growers, says the delay could potentially be “catastrophic” for crops. “Once the plants grow too wild they can’t be cultivated, and so they have to be basically killed down. So you’re talking about massive amounts of food waste, tons of money being poured down the toilet,” he said.

Vancouver, Toronto and Edmonton have the highest immigrant retention rates in the country, according to data published by Statistics Canada. The agency looked at immigrants who were admitted to Canada in 2014 and filed taxes in 2019. Five years after being admitted to Canada, 86.1 per cent of immigrants who first settled there had stayed in Vancouver, which had the highest retention rate of any metropolitan area, followed by Toronto (85.5 per cent) and Edmonton (84.6 per cent).
CBC News – Businesses in Windsor-Essex Ordered to Pause Bringing Temporary Foreign Workers to Ontario Region
Public health officials in southwestern Ontario have put a three-week pause on the arrival of any temporary foreign workers to the Windsor-Essex region. Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, acting medical officer of health for the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU), on Wednesday issued a new letter of instruction to business owners or operators who employ temporary foreign workers. Nesathurai said 275 migrant workers are self-isolating in the region. But officials are running out of space to care for people.
