With a smile on his face and a red Santa Claus hat atop of his head, a former Afghan interpreter fixes holiday decorations on the branches of a familiar sight this time of the year — a classic Christmas tree. The Afghan refugee, who spent years in Indonesia trying to seek asylum, arrived in his new home of Canada earlier this month.
Shahitha Maideen fell in love with writing when she was growing up in the southern Indian state of Kerala. It wasn’t until years later, when she found herself struggling to settle in a new country, that she rediscovered that love of writing as a way to cope with starting a new chapter of her life. She started writing a blog, called My World, and then started to write short stories. She says writing was therapeutic. Now she’s publishing her first book, The Island of Dreams, based on her experiences of being a newcomer in Canada.

Ils déplorent les difficultés à faire venir des réfugiés afghans au Canada et exhortent Ottawa à clarifier le processus. Les réfugiés peuvent venir au Canada grâce au gouvernement ou par le biais du Programme de parrainage privé de réfugiés, qui permet aux citoyens, aux résidents permanents et à certaines organisations de parrainer de nouveaux arrivants à condition qu’ils puissent soutenir les réfugiés avec les fonds nécessaires pour commencer une vie ici.
On Thursday, the federal government announced the milestone, adding that the record immigration flows were attained despite the ongoing pandemic, which prompted the country to close its borders to foreigners for much of the year. Because of the closed borders, Canada last year had switched immigration strategies, targeting those temporary residents already in the country, like international students and foreign workers, and converting them to permanent residency.

During the pandemic, as it became more and more difficult to bring people to Canada from abroad, the government turned to people already in the country to meet its immigration targets. While some of the new permanent residents this year have been immigrants and refugees who arrived in Canada through traditional means, the federal government focused on allowing temporary residents to make the country their permanent home.
