The Sudanese community in Calgary is struggling with a growing number of its young people winding up in jail or dying from avoidable causes, according to local leaders. Now, members of the Sudanese community are stepping up to try to address the root causes of the problem, as well as improve relations between them and the Calgary Police. According to the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, the city has the largest Sudanese diaspora in Canada with an estimated population of more than 17,000. Most are from South Sudan.
CBC News – After success keeping immigrants in Atlantic region, pilot program becomes permanent
After a five-year test run, an Atlantic immigration program that lets employers handpick workers from other countries, then fast tracks their permanent residency in Canada will be made permanent. Starting in January, Canada will be able to accept at least 6,000 applicants a year to the Atlantic program.

Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has laid out policy priorities for Immigration Minister Sean Fraser as part of a new round of mandate letters following the recent Liberal election victory. Trudeau’s letter, published on Thursday, calls for action on economic immigration, temporary workers, processing times, family reunification, citizenship, francophone immigration and refugees.

Refugee and human-rights advocates who oppose a pact between Ottawa and Washington on asylum seekers are welcoming the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision to examine whether the agreement violates the fundamental rights of claimants. The top court agreed Thursday to hear arguments about the constitutionality of the 17-year-old Safe Third Country Agreement, under which Canada and the United States recognize each other as havens to seek protection.
Global News – Girl Shot Dead by Taliban While Family Was Preparing to Flee to Canada
A 10-year-old girl was shot dead in Afghanistan while her family was preparing to flee to Canada under an immigration program for Afghans who worked for the Canadian Forces. The girl, Nazifa, was killed when gunfire erupted near a Taliban checkpoint in Kandahar on the night of Dec. 10. The father had worked for the Canadian military in Kandahar until 2011. The family was approved for resettlement by Canada, but was stuck in Afghanistan due to the lack of evacuation efforts.
