After eight years of fleeing war and conflict in the middle east, Zakareia Sedi finally got the call that his family would be accepted as refugees in Canada — but their arrival was delayed for more than a year due to COVID-19. “Getting to Canada, in my opinion, is winning the lottery,” Sedi said through a translator. A year and a half after getting accepted, Sedi, his wife Rudin Khalil and their two children, Hassan and Salahaldeen, finally arrived in Windsor.

As the first charter flight of Afghans with private sponsorship arrives in Canada, thousands of other refugees remain in limbo, without any indication of when they may arrive in their new home. On Thursday, the federal government announced the arrival of about 250 privately sponsored Afghan refugees to the Toronto airport. The group includes human-rights defenders, persecuted minorities, journalists and more, according to a news release.

Adrian Mendez cannot forget the moment in October 2019 when he was so tired from walking, he could only weep. Two months earlier, Mendez had arrived with his daughters from Mexico. At 58, he had always regretted not finishing university, so he came to the Island to study computer networking technology. Unable to find a rental in Charlottetown he could afford, Mendez saw an ad for a cottage near Brackley Beach. According to Google Maps, Mendez walked a total of about 32 kilometres most days in September and October.

A group of academics of Nigerian descent are calling on the Immigration Minister to investigate the declining number of study permit approvals for applicants from Nigeria, arguing that the English proficiency test is discriminatory and that racism within the department is affecting applications. Twenty-seven professors, scholars, academics, researchers and graduate students from universities across Canada signed a letter sent to Sean Fraser this week.
