To celebrate 40 years of work supporting immigrants and refugees who have come to Calgary, a local agency hosted a fun-filled event Tuesday for dozens of newcomers — including several Afghan refugees who just arrived in the city. Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) was founded in 1981 by a handful of volunteers who came together to support refugees from Vietnam. The group now operates as a multicultural team with more than 200 workers who collectively speak more than 60 languages.

Shortly after the news came of Kabul’s fall to the Taliban, Wendy Cukier started getting email from former sponsors of Syrian refugees looking to her to do something about the humanitarian crisis coming out of Afghanistan. The Ryerson University professor quickly convened the same advocates, colleagues and friends she worked closely with six years ago in the campaign to sponsor, welcome and resettle Syrian refugees as permanent residents in Canada. In response to the escalating crisis in Afghanistan, they would like to replicate their previous success.

In regards to the recent turmoil in Afghanistan, the Canadian government hasn’t provided any information on how many people taken in were unaccompanied minors. They have pledged to bring in 20,000 Afghan refugees overall. Aiken, who specializes in immigration and citizenship law, said most children who arrive in Canada without parents or primary caregivers usually have other family members in Canada.

Grassroots groups say they don’t know what advice to give hundreds of Afghans now stranded in Kabul after pleading for Canada’s help. The groups made up of veterans, refugee advocates and others say that is because the majority of those Afghans still have not heard back from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada on whether their applications for resettlement have been approved.
Calgary Herald – WinSport Welcomes Newcomers for a Day of Outdoor Activities to Connect Them with Community
The event was organized by WinSport and funded by Capital Power, a wholesale power producer, through WinSport’s Newcomers Program. Founded in 2017, the Newcomers Program links new Canadians to sport and recreation opportunities in their community. Judy Black, spokesperson for WinSport, said there were about 85 newcomers who explored Canada Olympic Park and participated in downhill karting, mini-golfing and other activities on Monday
