CTV News – Ripple Effect on Canadian Immigration Likely From Trump’s New Visa Restrictions

U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to slap visa restrictions on six new countries could affect immigration flows to Canada, if history is any indication, as those caught up in the changes find new reasons to come here. Past U.S. immigration policy moves on Haiti and Iran saw asylum claims and student visa applications for Canada jump, and now Trump is targeting Nigeria, Sudan and Eritrea, already among the largest sources of refugee claims lodged by people crossing irregularly into Canada from the U.S.

Global News – Kicked Off Facebook, Canadian Far-Right Groups Resurface on the Internet’s Fringes

Canadian far-right groups purged from mainstream social media sites last year have found a new home on less discerning online platforms willing to host them and their racist views. Although a crackdown that followed the March 15 attack on New Zealand mosques saw them purged from Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, they have resurfaced on Russia’s VK, Gab and Canund. But while their online presence hasn’t been stamped out, it has been significantly diminished, according to experts.

CBC News – Mother of Two Hides in Fort McMurray to Avoid Deportation

Last summer, Ngurimuje Mujoro deliberately missed the flight back to her birth country of Namibia from Edmonton International Airport. Booked by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) in a bid to remove her from the country, the deportation would have separated Mujoro from her husband, who is a permanent resident. Mujoro’s two Canadian-born children were also booked on that flight. “This land is a good land for them,” she said. “How could they suffer just because of me?”

CBC News – ‘Depressed and Overwhelmed’: Immigration Snags Split Calgary-Cuba Family in Half

Laura Silver, who lives in Calgary with her son Tito, and Carlos Gonzalez Trenzado were married in Cuba in 2018, and shortly after filed a permanent residency application to have the Cuban half of the blended family move to Canada. The federal government says the average processing time in the case of a spouse living outside Canada is 12 months. This family has waited 16 — so far. “I am depressed and overwhelmed,” Silver said. She’s only been able to see her husband three times since they were married.
