Global News – Former Toronto Hydro Building Becomes Refugee Shelter, Thanks to Iranian-Canadian Immigrants

The first and only city-run refugee shelter in Toronto successfully opened its doors Tuesday, with about 20 refugees climbing off a bus and dropping their heavy luggage in their new temporary space — all thanks to Iranian-Canadian immigrants who dished out millions to purchase the former Toronto Hydro building for the cause. “We wanted to give back to the community because we, as immigrants ourselves, we know the struggles they have when they come to a new country,” said Hamid Ghadaki.

CTV News – Quebec Immigration Minister Apologizes for Botched Reform of Foreign Student Program

Simon Jolin-Barrette is facing backlash over a reform he proposed earlier this month that would have placed severe limits on the number of foreign students allowed into the province, despite a labour shortage. Called the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ), the program was initially designed to allow all international students with an eligible degree, or those with work experience in Quebec, fast-track access to a Quebec selection certificate.

CBC News – Refugee Group’s Poppy Project Lands Amid Cherry Bombshell

Even before longtime Hockey Night in Canada personality Don Cherry made the divisive on-air comments that got him fired, an Ottawa group that helps newcomers settle here had already decided to ask “those people,” as Cherry called them, why they choose to wear the poppy on Remembrance Day. On Monday, Refugee613 posted a sample of their answers on the group’s Facebook page.

New York Times – Don Cherry, a Hockey Institution in Canada, Is Fired After Divisive Comments

Don Cherry, the colorfully dressed fixture of “Hockey Night in Canada” broadcasts, was fired on Monday after on-air comments that were widely viewed as a racist attack on the patriotism of immigrants. “Following further discussions with Don Cherry after Saturday night’s broadcast, it has been decided it is the right time for him to immediately step down,” said Bart Yabsley, the president of the cable channel Sportsnet, which produces the Saturday night N.H.L. games that make up “Hockey Night in Canada.”

National Post – Don Cherry Fired by Sportsnet Over ‘You People’ Rant on Coach’s Corner

Cherry, 85, had singled out new immigrants in Toronto and Mississauga, Ont., where he lives, for not honouring Canada’s veterans and dead soldiers. “You people … you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that,” Cherry said Saturday night on the popular “Coach’s Corner” segment.
