CBC News – Exhibition Brings Images, Voices of Rohingya Refugee Crisis to Winnipeg

A new exhibition at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights brings together the Winnipeg-born photojournalist’s images of Rohingya refugees and the voices of 12 Rohingya Canadians who contributed interviews, photos, video and artifacts. “I just want people to see us [as] more than just numbers,” said Yasmin Ullah, a Rohingya Canadian who lives in Surrey, B.C., whose voice can be heard in the exhibition. Ullah, 27, hopes the exhibition will help Canadians understand the Rohingya a little bit better.

CBC News – Fake Online Stories Claim Trudeau Begged Foreign Leaders ‘to Send Him a Million Immigrants’

“Canada’s Prime Minister begs Nigeria President for one million immigrants,” reads the headline on an article published in April on the website CBTV. The fabricated story has been shared about 2,600 times and drew negative reactions from the Yellow Vests Canada Facebook group, which is attached to the Canadian arm of the Yellow Vests, a mass movement of protests in France against taxation and high gas prices. The article also circulated on social media, including WhatsApp groups in Nigeria.

Global News – B.C. Experts Predict ‘Mass Migration’ of Expats from Hong Kong Over Extradition Bill Protests

A Vancouver immigration lawyer and other experts are warning the Canadian and B.C. governments to prepare for a “mass migration” of expats fleeing Hong Kong as protests against a controversial extradition bill continue to rock the territory. The proposed law would make it easier for suspects from the semi-autonomous Chinese territory to be extradited to mainland China to face trial. Protesters and critics say the proposal will erode Hong Kong’s judicial independence by allowing suspects to face vague charges and harsh sentences in Beijing.

Globe and Mail – Richmond, B.C.-area Liberal MP Calls for Federal Action to Curb the Practice of ‘Birth Tourism’

A Liberal MP is calling on the federal government to address the practice of non-resident mothers coming to Canada to give birth, which he calls an “awful practice” that must be stopped. Joe Peschisolido, Liberal MP for Steveston-Richmond East, says he has spoken with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Ahmed Hussen about the issue of “birth tourism” and expects a response from government to be forthcoming. Mr. Peschisolido said such practice is taking advantage of Canadian immigration and health-care systems.
