Global News – Atlantic Immigrant Career Loan Fund Aims to Help Newcomers Get Canadian Credentials

When Dr. Michael Fatokun moved to Atlantic Canada from Nigeria in 2018, he wished to give his family a better life and continue practising medicine. A new program is set to make that process a little easier. The Atlantic Immigrant Career Loan Fund (AICLF) is supposed to help up to 200 newcomers like Fatokun pay for the credential recognition process. Through the fund, newcomers are able to borrow up to $15,000 over four years in professions not eligible for student loan funding.

CBC News – Foreign Students Say They ‘Have No Choice’ But to Work More Than Their Permits Allow

For Jobandeep Singh Sandhu, it was his job as a truck driver that got him in trouble. CBC News – Quebecers Dance Their Way Into the Hearts of Newcomers

A pair of weather-worn leather shoes taps out the steady rhythm as l’Orkestrad de Kamouraska performs a traditional Québécois reel on stage. The evening’s câller barks out instructions, and dozens of dancers attentively follow — stepping to the right, stepping to the left, spinning their partner ’round and ’round. At first glance, it may look like any other traditional music celebration. But this one in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli has an inviting twist. The locals and old-timers promenading on the dance floor are paired up with recent immigrants to Quebec.

Global News – Employment Rate of Recent Immigrants to Canada Reached New High Last Year: Memo

The share of recent immigrants of prime working age who had employment reached a new high last year, even though Canada has been opening its doors to more newcomers than ever before, according to an internal federal analysis. The increase was likely driven in part by the country’s strong job-creation run, which has encouraged companies to hire more people who usually find themselves at the margins of the workforce, says the document prepared for Finance Minister Bill Morneau. Immigrants who arrived less than five years ago fall into that category.
