CBC News – Some Believe U.S. No Safe Haven for Asylum Seekers, Despite Canada’s Third Country Agreement

The governing Liberals have long claimed our neighbour to the south is a viable alternative to Canada for migrants, but shifts in policy by the administration of President Donald Trump have left some worrying that asylum seekers are now at risk in the U.S. “There are serious problems with the asylum system in the United States right now,” said Maureen Silcoff, an executive member of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers.

Globe and Mail – Liberal Government Expanding Program to Protect Foreign Workers in Canada From Exploitation

Most foreign nationals here temporarily working at low-wage jobs on farms and in the service sector are bound by law to work only for one employer. Starting next week, temporary foreign workers who find themselves in abusive job situations will be able to apply for open work permits that will allow them to find other jobs in Canada. This will expand a pilot project that started in British Columbia in 2016 and has granted 51 such permits up to November of last year.

Toronto Star – New Immigration Rules Boost Family Reunification, Protect Abused Migrants

Immigrants who failed to declare the existence of a lost family member when they first came to Canada will now get a chance to bring them here under a new two-year pilot project. The initiative, that begins in September, was one of several announced by Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen on Friday. Advocates for migrants have long complained that the existing policy creates hardship for refugees to reunite with family members or for migrants who failed to disclose the existence of children they initially didn’t know were theirs.

Globe and Mail – Employers Taking Cash From Foreign Workers Seeking Permanent Resident Status in Canada

Multiple sources came forward about the payoffs to employers – up to $20,000 – after a Globe and Mail investigation published in April identified 45 recruiters and immigration consultants accused of exploiting more than 2,000 people, primarily by charging them thousands of dollars for jobs in Canada. The sources said the payments to employers are cash transactions, illegal and virtually impossible to trace, which come straight out of the exorbitant fees that immigration consultants collect from the foreign nationals for arranging the job offers for them.
