Lloyd Axworthy and Allan Rock said it is time for the Liberal government to revoke Ms. Suu Kyi’s honour amid mounting international criticism of her handling of the Rohingya crisis. Their comments come days after a scathing United Nations report faulted Ms. Suu Kyi for failing to use her “moral authority” to prevent the violence that has forced nearly 725,000 Rohingya, an ethnic minority in Myanmar, to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh.

Le Brésil a mobilisé son armée à la frontière avec le Venezuela pour faire face au flux de réfugiés qui fuient depuis des mois leur pays, secoué par une grave crise économique et politique. Dans une allocution télévisée mardi soir, le président Michel Temer, qui a lui-même ordonné le déploiement par décret, a expliqué que son geste était rendu nécessaire pour « garantir la sécurité des citoyens brésiliens, mais aussi des immigrants vénézuéliens qui fuient leur pays ».

Une famille de demandeurs d’asile originaire du Moyen-Orient devra encore attendre des mois avant de savoir si la Commission de l’immigration et du statut de réfugié (CISR) lui permettra de rester au Canada. La journée de l’audience devant le commissaire n’a pas suffi et la suite a été reportée au 14 novembre prochain.

Bill Blair, the new minister responsible for border security and organized crime reduction, has been officially tasked with leading the charge on irregular migration and looking at whether Canada should ban handguns and assault weapons. A mandate letter from the prime minister says Blair must lead conversations with the United States on the Safe Third Country Agreement on asylum seekers, working closely with Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen.
CBC News – ‘It’s Fraudulent’: Former Immigration Official Says Action Needed on ‘Passport Babies’
One of Canada’s former top immigration officials says so-called passport babies are a genuine problem and closing a loophole being exploited by pregnant foreign tourists is required to curtail the fraudulent practice. Some have suggested this is a solution looking for a problem as, according to Statistics Canada, just 313 babies were born in this country in 2016 to non-Canadian mothers. But other data suggests the phenomenon is more common. Richmond Hospital in Richmond, B.C., recorded 383 births to non-resident mothers in 2016-17 — representing 17.2 per cent of all births at the hospital.
