CBC News – Former CBSA Agent Handed 6 Years for Raping and Extorting Halifax Student Facing Deportation
Carie Dexter Willis, 58, was supposed to be handling the woman’s deportation in 2003. Instead, he offered to bury her file in exchange for sex, a Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge said Thursday. “He deliberately and repeatedly abused his authority,” Justice Suzanne Hood said as she sentenced Willis in a Halifax courtroom. Hood convicted Willis earlier this year of sexual assault, extortion and breach of trust following a trial. The crimes were committed 15 years ago, but a complaint was made only in 2014.

Mayor Eric Duncan was part of a group of about 20 residents in North Dundas who decided in 2015 to raise the money to sponsor a Syrian family to come to Canada. It took about two and half years to get the necessary approvals and the sponsorship group had little warning of their arrival, so the family had no place to stay. Duncan offered his home in the village of Winchester to allow the family to settle and save for a place of their own.
Toronto Star – Immigration Department Aims to Provide More Reliable Processing Times
Immigration Canada has adopted a new way to calculate application processing times to give people a better idea of how long their case may take so they can better plan their move. Officials will now project processing times based on existing backlogs and annual admission targets. According to the department, until August, all processing times posted of its website were “historical” and showed how long it took for 80 per cent of the applications in a particular immigration stream to be dealt with in the previous year.
