The federal government has spent over $270 million on irregular border crossers over the last year and a half, according to government figures submitted to the parliamentary budget office. The parliamentary budget officer Jean-Denis Frechette had asked all four agencies involved in dealing with irregular migration to also include projected costs for irregular migration for the next five years. The CBSA, RCMP and Immigration departments all said they could not provide future cost projections because the numbers of border crossers often fluctuate and are unpredictable.
A long-promised triage system aimed at redirecting illegal border crossers from crowded shelters in Montreal and Toronto will not be in place until as late as the end of September. The federal government says it’s working with municipalities across Ontario and must identify available housing capacity before it can roll out its triage program. Ottawa announced the system in April following concerns by the Quebec government over an influx of asylum seekers flooding temporary housing facilities in Montreal.

Nova Scotia hopes that fast-tracking the immigration process for early childhood educators will help fill the growing number of jobs created by the continued rollout of pre-primary across the province and the new daycare spaces promised by Ottawa. The change will allow the province to invite people with federal pre-approval to come to Canada to immigrate immediately to Nova Scotia. Next week, the province will send letters to 180 people who have the required two years of experience in early childhood education, inviting them to immigrate here.

The recent drowning of an eight-year-old Syrian refugee has highlighted the findings of two studies which indicate new arrivals in the country are more at risk of drowning. A 2010 study done for the Lifesaving Society concluded that new Canadians are at a higher risk of drowning when boating or swimming than people born here. The Ipsos Reid Public Affairs study revealed that almost one-third of new Canadians are nervous around water and half of new Canadian parents fear their children may drown.
