Post-secondary students from abroad will start the fall 2018 semester without universal health care in Manitoba, to the dismay of those from far away who have come to the Prairies at already high costs. On Friday, the province’s Progressive Conservative government passed an amendment to the Health Services Insurances Act repealing a 2012 clause that gave college and university students from abroad access to universal health care. The change comes into effect Sept. 1, 2018.
Global News – Irregular Border Crossings See Slight Increase in February
The number of people crossing the Canada-U.S. border between legal checkpoints slightly increased in February, new numbers show, and Ottawa is bracing for a possible spike as the weather warms this spring. The number of interceptions in January was 1,517, meaning that there was a small increase month-to-month. There was a drop of several hundred crossings between December and January, which seemed to suggest that efforts in Ottawa to clamp down were having an effect. That pattern has not held.

The number of newcomers to Canada choosing to make Calgary their home is steadily rising, and that’s both beneficial and challenging for the city, according to one local expert. Fariborz Birjandian, who heads the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, says that 15 years ago Calgary used to welcome three to four thousand newcomers and refugees per year. Now that number is up around 20,000 and is expected to keep growing.

Without a renewed push from city council, the proposal to declare London a sanctuary city could be dead in the water. A report coming to politicians next week highlights the divisive community feedback to the so-called sanctuary city label council debated last year.
